ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The heart of the Commonweal’s programming is the main stage season. This balanced yet challenging repertory is comprised of up to six plays with more than 200 performances, chosen from among the world’s finest classic, contemporary, and emerging playwrights. Because Lanesboro is located amidst a high concentration of Norwegian-American families, the Commonweal produces the works of Henrik Ibsen annually, and remains the only theatre company in North America with such a commitment. The Commonweal is also commited to developing new works for the American stage, producing more than 20 world premieres in our history.

When We Dead Awaken
By Henrik Ibsen Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher

April 14-June 17

Sculptor Arnold Rubek has it all: fame, fortune, a beautiful young wife. Yet his work has descended into mediocrity, and his life has sunk into a pit of boredom. A chance encounter with his muse - the model for his masterpiece and the only woman he ever loved - ignites in him the passions he has long stifled. Art and life play out their conflict as Rubek searches for the man he once was, the artist his muse once inspired. Subtitled "A Dramatic Epilogue," Ibsen's final play is also the last in our series of adaptations by playwright Jeffrey Hatcher.

The Elephant Man
By Bernard Pomerance

May 19 - September 2, 2017

Glorifying the triumph of the human spirit, The Elephant Man has been hailed by The New York Times as a “startling act of magic.” In 19th-century England, John Merrick is born with a genetic condition that leaves him horribly disfigured. First viewed as a carnival sideshow freak, he is ultimately embraced by the highest levels of English society. As Merrick struggles to understand what it means to be human, he imparts on others a lesson about dignity and ultimately proves that true beauty lies in the eye – and the soul – of the beholder.

Steel Magnolias
By Robert Harling

After 30 years, there’s still no story that better celebrates the gift of friendship than Steel Magnolias! The close-knit women who frequent Truvy’s Beauty Salon have lots of time to gossip, but it’s their unshakeable bonds that define them. Amid cuts, curls and free advice, these six glorious Southern belles share the joys and bear the sorrows of life together. With its mix of quick humor, quirky personalities and touching sentimentality, you’ll fall in love all over again with a story and characters that are “as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel.”

Ghost-Writer
By Michael Hollinger

September 7 - November 12, 2017

When famous novelist Franklin Woolsey dies mid-sentence, his secretary Myra continues to take dictation, somehow, in this romance-meets-mystery-meets-ghost story. Attacked by skeptics, the press and Woolsey’s jealous widow, Myra sets out to prove she is more than just an artful forger. Is she trying to steal Woolsey’s legacy now that she cannot have his love, or might she truly possess a gift the world can’t understand? The Philadelphia Inquirer calls Ghost-Writer a “tantalizing, understated and lovely” romance about the power of the written word and the wonder of creativity.
