Andy Warhol: Minnesota Goes Pop is a regional reflection and reconstitution of how popular culture manifests itself in the works of contemporary artists in Minnesota. Their work engages in meaningful dialogue not only with the ever changing world around them but also with Warhol’s original pop art.
Warhol dissolved boundaries between art and life, between accessible, everyday culture and high or fine art. Like a sponge, Warhol soaked up what he saw, whether he loved or reviled it and reflected it all back to us.
In the main galleries of Rochester Art Center 36 Warhol prints and 11 Minnesota artists will be displayed together. The contemporary artists create from a wide range of source materials; grocery store chickens, K-Pop, terrorist attack victims’ videos, Mexican advertising, lottery tickets, old LP’s, Red Owl grocery stores and Darth Vader. This unlikely mixture of pop culture enlivens and makes more relevant the strong, repetitive staccato of Warhol’s signature screen prints.
Artists include Jim Denomie, Frank Gaard, Maria Cristina Tavera, Ziyang Wu, Rory Wakemup, Krista Kelley Walsh, Star Wallowing Bull, Bianca Pettis, Dylan Redford, Nick Medearis and Katayoun Amjadi.
This exhibition has been made possible by support from the City of Rochester, a generous loan from The Cochran Collection, the McKnight Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Clean Water Land & Legacy Amendment, and is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.
